Hello lovely people!
We are again blogging on a Monday...oops. Oh well.
Last week was a strange week for us teaching here. Just as a quick refresher...usually we are guaranteed 4 days a week (if we're available) other than the weeks on either side of a break. Last week there was a strike on Wednesday, so our guaranteed days went down to 3 because there was going to be less work.
So, at home all the teachers are with the same union and if there's a strike, all teachers are striking and there's no school. Here, there are different unions so not all teachers are with the same ones...even teachers within a school can be with any number of different unions. So some classes were cancelled, but others in the same school weren't, and unless the school had teachers all from the union that was striking, most schools were open. So...what that meant for us was that there was some work, just not as much.
Monday-I didn't work, Sam was at the all girls high school (the one that's actually not too bad) and "taught" computers...and by taught, we mean she sat around while the kids worked on projects and finished off the day watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Tough day.
Tuesday-Sam taught year 3 and had a really good day. I was at my favourite primary school teaching PE. I had a great day :)
We went to the gym for a good workout after school. Sam also got a letter from her friend Jordan...it was full of confetti. It legit took her about 10 minutes to get it all off the letter so she could read it.
Wednesday (the strike day)-Sam didn't work, and I got an afternoon teaching year 6. It was a really nice school, the kids were fun.
We swam after school and Sam got a fun package from her friend Kelsey.
Thursday-Sam didn't work again, and I got called into South-East...late, and then they gave me the wrong directions, so I was pretty late. I taught year 5 for the morning then year 6 in the afternoon (although I was only told year 5 so at lunch when the year 6 teacher sat down and started explaining the afternoon to me, I was really confused). It was a really cool day though. It was the school's "Book Week" and this day was the whole school's "Book Day". So each year was reading a different book and was writing their own sequel or book in a series, and the areas around each year was decked out fully based on their book. I got to the year 5 class and had to walk through the wardrobe doorway to enter Narnia. They were writing their book in the series, then we went to an assembly that the kids got to choose from about 10+ books and scatter around the school to listen to a teacher read it and then do an activity based on it. It was really cool because you had all ages with each group. After recess they just continued working on their story. After lunch with the year 6 group they were making their book covers, then we buddy read with a year 3 class, then had another assembly to talk about how great books are, and then the day ended. It was a lot of fun.
We worked out for about 2 hours after school this day...longest workout we've done since being here. It was great.
Friday-Sam taught English at the all boys high school and I taught year 3 at a primary school in the same area, so we got to bus together most of the way to school. It was a long day for both of us. High school is exhausting no matter what and the year 3 class I had is just so crazy and loud it's tough just trying to get through a whole lesson.
We had our usual pizza and a movie Friday night.
Saturday we started off with laundry, like usual. We had a bit of a later start but headed up to Oxford Circus with Brianne and Mary and did a bunch of wandering/looking in shops.
Did that for a few hours then the girls headed home and we met up with Meghan, her mom and friend from home, Cierra, and Marina.
We had drinks at a Mexican place in Oxford Circus area, then headed to Piccadilly Circus to wander for a while because Meghan's mom and friend hadn't seen that yet. After that we headed to Covent Garden area to find somewhere to have dinner. We walked around that area trying to find something and ended up in a Mediterranean Bistro. It had a really random menu...and was alright, nothing to write home about.
After dinner we said good-bye and made our trek home.
Sunday we finished our laundry and then headed up into Oxford Circus again to meet up with Jenna, who is another UVic Education grad and was here for a week. We had lunch at the awesome burger place we found with the girls after our induction day with Engage. They really are great burgers. We ended up sitting and chatting for a long time. She's considering moving over here, possibly to teach, and we told stories and told her about life here and just really had a good catch-up. When we were talking she said she hadn't been to Primark yet so we had to take her there to wander around a bit, then she ended up coming back to our place for dinner and just a bit more time to chat. We did a quick grocery shop on our way home and ended up walking from there. We had a great visit, but were idiots because we didn't get a single picture with her :(
She really made us living here feel real. She just kept saying "I can't believe you girls are living in London" and things like that and to be honest, sometimes we just kind of forget, especially during the week. We just get so into our routine of work, gym/swimming, household chores, grocery shopping that it doesn't really feel different than home. We do try to go into London on the weekends and do touristy things so that we do remember where we are, but having someone from home come here and remind us and think it's so cool and exciting, it just really made it real.
Also, going through all the things that are funny/strange/different here in schools and just life in general, and little tips that we've picked up or been told about really made us realize how much we've learned in such a short time. So we'll probably do a blog post about that at some point.
We are truly lucky to be able to be doing what we're doing. It's such a great experience and even on bad days, we just remember where we are.
Also, we only have 4 days left until our 2 week break!!! We've started planning stuff we're going to do and you're going to be so jealous when you read our blog posts during that time :) Let's remix this business!
Thanks for reading!
We out.

We're ready for take-off...in our rocketship washer
Hello everyone!
So apparently our blogging day is now Monday...2 weeks in a row now. Haha. It's just because we're so wild and crazy on the weekends now. Yup, that's our story and we're sticking to it.
So, Monday last week was the Muslim school that Sam and I were TAs at.
Tuesday I didn't work and Sam went to a new all girls high school, that she said was the best high school she's been to. So her day wasn't too bad.
We went to the gym after Sam finished work.
Wednesday I was pre-booked for a school I love, but then was switched to a new school our company has just signed on with. It was a pretty good day, I was in a year 1 class and both the class and school were really nice. I had a good day with them.
Sam was back in the PRU school (the one for kids that were kicked out of regular school) and had a very strange day where she taught half the day and the other half was told to hide in the staff room. Lots of kids weren't in that day.
Thursday I had a super weird day. Went to a school and was supposed to be in year 3 and ended up being in Year 4 for the morning, year 6 for about 30 minutes and then year 3 for 30 mins until lunch then the afternoon. The year 4s were really nice, the year 6s were a gong show, and the year 3s were nice but very loud and unfocused.
Sam was in a year 1 class...she had a bit of a chaotic day. She did an art lesson where the teacher got her to paint the students arms to make trees in the different seasons...great lesson to leave for a supply teacher.
We went for a swim after work that day.
Friday I got called after 9 and ended up in a really nice school with a good group of year 5. I had a great day.
Sam was in an all boys high school teaching science and had a crazy day.
Friday night we watched the first half of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and had an early night.
Saturday was really productive. We both woke up early (shocker!) and cuddled in Sam's bed to watch the Princess and the Frog, then got out of bed and started our laundry while we watched the second half of the first Harry Potter.
After the movies we decided to do a workout at home and chose one off my computer. We then vacuumed and did a big clean of the bathroom. We then watched 2 more silly movies while we got ready to go out and ate dinner.
We went out with a bunch of the Canadian girls that we met through our teaching company here. There were about 8 of us that went out. We met at Alex's house to hang out and chat first...these teachers need their jiggle juice!
Then we headed into Clapham Junction (the station we sit at every morning to wait for our calls) and to a club called the Clapham Grand. It was a lot of fun. We danced and chatted and and stuff....we had a great time.
Busing home didn't take too long either which was night...but it was a long night and we didn't get to sleep until after 3:30...then both woke up about 7:00. We're such good sleepers.
Sunday was the laziest day we've had in a long time. We ate and watched movies all day. Then went to bed early.
We're going to save our day today for next week...I know, you can't wait that long, but don't hold your breath.

Canadian Country Girls shakin' it in the UK
Hiya. You alright? (Typical English phrase for Hi, how are you doing?)
We had a pretty good week teaching (both of us had 4 day weeks) and a great weekend this week.
To start off...thank you so much to our awesome friend Taylor Hackett, and Pat Cracknell for answering our call for Tim Tams. We received 2 packages containing 4 packs of Tim Tams each and are happy campers now :)
Sam taught at a PRU school Monday...which is for kids that get kicked out of mainstream school. Some wear ankle bracelets...it's a bit frightening. She had a very funny discussion with one of the boys though during a lesson about the menstrual cycle (in a class of 3 boys with a male teacher). Essentially this 13/14 year old boy just couldn't wrap his head around the fact that girls "bleed" for a week every month. He asked a bunch of questions and kept coming back to "EVERY MONTH?!" He also calculated that girls have their period for about 6.2 years of their lives. She had the opportunity to get a contract until the end of the school year in a year 1 class, so Tuesday she went into that class for the day. They were an amazing class, but full-time over here is just not what she wants right now so she turned it down. Wednesday she had a day off. Thursday she taught a SEN class of 7 Autistic boys. She had a wonderful day with them. Friday she taught high school Art. It was pretty good for a high school day, the other art teacher was really supportive and the kids were pretty talented.
I had a great week. I started off in year 5 in a new school...a great school and very nice class. They had a lot of questions about my family and pets back home so I made a little slide show to show them. Tuesday I had another new school, and it was a big trek...all the way out to Essex. I taught a mixture of kids in years 5 and 6. Wednesday I got to go to one of my favourite schools...an all girls prep school, teaching year 4 for the morning and then my favourite, elementary PE. I got to play cricket for the first time. Thursday I went to a school that our friend Mary has a contract at, and taught a year 5 class. It was a really fun day. Friday I had the day off, so I ended up going for a nice long run around the area that we are living. It was a gorgeous sunny day so it was wonderful.
We went to they gym Wednesday and I kicked Sam's butt...it felt great.
Friday night we had a lazy night.
Saturday we headed out on the town...up to Notting Hill area.
It's a gorgeous area, and was a very pretty day.
There's a big market there called the Portobello Market. We wandered through there for a few hours...it was huge! Lots of antiques, and clothes, and food, and weird nick-knacks. We also found the blue door that Hugh Grant's character lived in in the movie Notting Hill.
We headed home after that for dinner, then headed back out to meet our friends Brianne and Mary in Balham to go into Piccadilly Circus.
We wandered around up there for a few hours before heading home again. It was lots of fun.
Sunday we got all countrified to go to our concert.
We got ready early so that we could go up into London for a bit before the concert.
We ended up around Waterloo Station...wandered up by the Thames for a bit
then through this food market where we had an early dinner.
We then headed towards where the O2 stadium is. We decided to take the cable car from Royal Victoria Docks across the river to the stadium.
The docks area was gorgeous and the cable car ride was really cool. Great view and such a pretty day for it. We got to the stadium and of course had to get our jumping pic before heading in.
We were curious what the crowd would be like here (figured there would be a lot of Americans and Canadians). It was a big crowd, a lot older age-wise than we expected, and lots more Brits than we thought.
The concert was phenominal!!! It was super long...started around 4:30 and didn't finish until 10:30.
Chris Young kicked it off with a full set of songs. He played straight through, not much chit-chat. He was great. The Band Perry did a lot of hyping up the crowd. They did some fun, country versions of "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen and then "Timber" by Kesha and Pitbull which led into their song called "Chainsaw". It was really fun. Then Rascal Flatts came out and rocked it. They are AMAZING live. They added in "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars to lead into one of their love songs...it fit really well. They finished with an encore of "Life is a Highway" and killed it...we may have gone nuts when they sang "The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights".
And of course, Brad Paisley finished out the night (Sam and I guessed the order of the first 2 artists pretty easily, but spent a lot of time trying to guess the order of Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley...apparently Paisley is pretty big here). He kicked serious butt live.
His guitar skills are crazy
He's funny and really connects with the crowd. He even took someone in the front area's phone to take a video from up on stage, sang to it, then took a selfie! It was so funny. And we were jealous.
We had so much fun. Transited home, and were absolutely exhausted and half asleep on our last train and then bus home. By the time we got home it was after midnight and we both woke up really early that morning (me at 6, Sam at 6:30...stupid not being able to sleep in). So our sleep was short...5ish hours, and up for work.
We ended up a Clapham with 4 others for an hour before we both got sent to a school to be TAs for the day. It was our first time at the same school, so that was nice.
It ended up being a Muslim school and was a very different experience for both of us. It was a lovely school and nice kids.
We had a great week and weekend...thanks for reading.
